The Path

Market discipline came first. Early in his career, Barry Sternlicht worked as an arbitrage trader at Wall Street, before moving more directly into real estate. Property training followed as an employee at JMB Realty in Chicago until 1989, where the work was closer to the complexity of assets, ownership, and development. The durable platform became Starwood Capital Group, where he has been co-founder, chairman and CEO since 1991. Hotel branding and investment scale became the next field of work. As founder, chairman and CEO at Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide from 1995–2005, Sternlicht worked during a period when global hospitality was giving sharper identities to brands and asking lifestyle positioning to carry more commercial weight. In parallel, he also served as CEO at Hotel Investors Trust from 1995, extending the lodging work through an investment vehicle.
