Cal Fussman

The Path

University of Missouri trained Cal Fussman for newspaper work, and the first stretch of his career ran through major daily newsrooms before shifting into magazine writing. At The Miami Herald, he worked as a writer; at The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he worked as a writer; and at Newsday, he worked as a writer. Those assignments point to a reporter built on cadence, timing, and the ability to hear what sits behind the quoted line as much as the line itself. That same attention carries through the later move into freelance work and long-form magazine space. Today, he works as a freelance writer and as writer at large of Esquire, a combination that leaves room for continuity and range: the regular discipline of editorial assignment, and the freedom to pursue interviews that depend on patience, curiosity, and a careful ear.

The Work Today

He continues as Writer at Large at Esquire. In that role, Cal Fussman is associated with interview-led journalism that treats the conversation as the core form, not a prelude to the piece. The method is simple enough to name and difficult to do well: make the exchange feel unforced so the material arrives with less polish and more residue of the room it came from.

Acclaim

He also wrote for Time and Life, widening the range of publications carrying his byline. Alongside that editorial work, he worked as sommelier at Windows of the World in New York, a second line of practice that places him between service and reporting, where reading people and pacing a room matter as much as getting the facts straight.
