The Climb
In downtown New York, the first useful training ground is often the threshold. Debi Mazar worked as VIP doorperson at Mudd Club in New York City and employee at Danceteria in New York City, positions that put her close to the room, the crowd, and the pace of the city before she was ever in front of it. From there, she moved into image-making and performance: makeup artist at Madonna's first music video "Everybody" (1982), television appearance at Graffiti Rock (1984), and hair and makeup creator at Speed-the-Plow (1988). The work widened from nightlife and styling into acting, but the common thread stayed the same: a close read of presentation, timing, and persona. Screen roles then accumulated in steady succession. She moved from lead role at Civil Wars (1991–1993) to recurring role at L.A. Law (1993–1994), and appeared as actor at Beethoven's 2nd (1993). The range kept expanding through actor at That's Life (2000–2002), voice actor at Grand Theft Auto III (2001), and voice actor at Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004). A defining run followed with supporting role as Shauna Roberts at Entourage (2004–2011), then recurring role as merrill at Living with Fran and guest role as Leah Stillman at Ugly Betty, before contestant at Dancing With the Stars (2009).
