i. Biography
Brand architecture, governance, and scaled consumer systems are the working materials here.Consumer brands, hospitality platforms, boardrooms, and investment tables supplied repeated exposure to the same trade problem: how people travel, buy, gather, and remain loyal when the enterprise behind the offer is large. The clearest operating case was Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. in White Plains, New York, where van Paasschen led from 2007 to 2015. The model used nine distinct brands supported by shared loyalty, revenue-management, and sales systems. For hospitality operators, the useful lesson is structural: keep the guest proposition differentiated while the commercial machinery stays common.
The Path
Technical formation came through Mercer Island High School, Amherst College, and Harvard Business School. Advisory and analytical practice followed through management positions at Boston Consulting Group; First Call Corporation; Goldman, Sachs & Co.; and McKinsey & Company (from 1983), where corporate change, analysis, and client systems were the work. Consumer-brand operations then added licensing, planning, and regional execution to the frame. At Disney Consumer Products, The Walt Disney Company (from 1995), van Paasschen served as Vice President of finance & planning, a role tied to the financial and planning systems behind licensing and brand extension. At Nike Inc. (from 1998), he became Vice President of Global Strategic Planning, then Vice President and General Manager of canada, Latin America and africa at Nike Inc. (1998–2000), followed by Corporate Vice President and General Manager of europe, Middle East and africa at Nike Inc. (2000–2004). Those roles tested brand discipline against regional execution and international market complexity. Category change came through president and Chief Executive Officer at Coors Brewing Company (2005–2007), where loyalty, channel behavior, and competition operated through a different buying ritual. Governance work developed in the same period through Independent Director at Oakley, Inc. (2005–2007), and director at The Jones Group Inc. (from 2006). Hospitality then gathered the earlier strands into one operating frame. In 2007, van Paasschen became president and Chief Executive Officer at Starwood (2007–2015), while also serving as Board Member at Starwood (from 2007). Later appointments extended the governance practice, including Non-Executive Director at Barclays Bank (from 2013) and advisory Board Member at citizenM hotels (from 2017). Today, Frits is director of Williams-Sonoma (since 2017) and director and Board Chair of Convene (since 2018), with governance work spanning consumer experience, hospitality, workplace, and retail.
The Work Today
The current portfolio cuts across hospitality, consumer, workplace, investment, search, and food-and-design retail. The shared operating question is coherence: how the offer is defined, how the customer recognizes it, and how growth is added without flattening the brand into a generic category signal. “I was born in the small town outside of Leiden in the Netherlands which is called Oegstgeest.” Frits has said.
Signature
The named signature is The Disruptor’s Feast. In trade terms, the title names a recurring operating condition: market change arriving faster than the company’s structure, capital, customer habits, or brand position can easily absorb. Van Paasschen’s work has met that condition across consulting, consumer products, brewing, hospitality, financial-services governance, and investment-oriented board roles.
Acclaim
Recognition centers on disruption, global change, and hospitality branding as operating disciplines rather than abstractions. At the hotel company van Paasschen led from 2007 to 2015, the model was specific: nine distinct brands, each with its own identity, supported by global systems for loyalty, revenue management, and sales. The trade value is the separation of expression from infrastructure: individuality at the guest level can coexist with shared enterprise capability. Board authority later came from the same combination of brand differentiation and centralized commercial structure. The career sequence runs from economics training to consulting, consumer products, brewing, hotels, financial-services governance, and investor-board roles. Its continuity is institutional adaptation: keeping brands legible across borders, responding when markets move, and maintaining coherence inside businesses operating in many places at once.
