i. Biography
In 2025, a Decanter World Wine Awards judging seat in London placed blind tasting at the centre of the work: controlled attention, recall, restraint, and the ability to separate preference from assessment. Kamal Malik entered that room as an Indian sommelier, beverage manager, and specialist in wine, spirits, and sake, with a background that runs from a sugarcane-growing family farm near Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, through luxury hospitality, island cellars, formal certification, and professional evaluation. Beverage craft is built in service as much as in study. In Malik’s case, the palate was trained through dining-room rhythm, guest language, and the pressure of making pleasure function professionally.
The Path
Luxury hospitality gives beverage work its first discipline: timing, temperature, reading the table, and understanding when service should speak and when it should stay quiet. Early roles at Oberoi Udaivilas / Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, Taj, and Hilton gave Kamal Malik that foundation in guest experience and polished service, where what is in the glass is context and trust. Operational beverage work requires more than a good palate. It asks for service judgment, category awareness, and an understanding of how wine and spirits perform in real rooms with real guests. Malik carried that training from hospitality into a broader beverage remit; today, Kamal is Sales Manager of Maritime and Mercantile International (MMI), applying front-line luxury-hospitality grounding to a commercial brief.
The Work Today
Distribution keeps beverage craft close to movement: bottles, brands, accounts, training, and the people who will finally sell, open, and serve the selection. In the Maldives, Malik works as Sales Manager at Maritime and Mercantile International (MMI), where wine evaluation, hospitality, education, and beverage management meet a commercial role. The work depends on sensory precision without being limited to tasting notes. Category, quality, style, and service context all matter. Malik’s role sits between analysis and use: what a wine is, how it performs, and how it can be understood by those selling, serving, or drinking it. Judging work adds another register of evaluation. In 2025, Malik served as a judge for the Decanter World Wine Awards in London; in 2026, he judges the China Wine Competition in China. Those panels require controlled attention and comparative judgment without reducing wine to a formula. His own shorthand is direct: “It's not science, it's an art.”
Signature
Wine evaluation is Malik’s craft centre. His signature sits where service discipline, beverage management, and judging meet: a generous reading of the guest, a structured reading of category and quality, and a steady palate under scrutiny.
In Their Words “I considered giving it all up, but my wife and friends pushed me to continue.” “It's not science, it's an art.”
