The Path
Durham University is the only formal education, but the more formative early training was military: after university, Matthew J. Shattock served as a tank commander in the British army. He has described that role as a great opportunity to learn about leadership and its responsibility. That framing still reads like a useful operating principle for the kind of work that followed: managing people, pressure, and consequence at scale. From there, the work moved through large consumer businesses where execution matters as much as strategy. At Unilever Best Foods North America, where he served as Chief Operating Officer until 2003, the remit sat inside a business that required coordination across many moving parts. He then served as president of the Britain, Ireland, Middle East & Africa region at Cadbury plc from 2003 to 2009, taking responsibility for a major international region with a broad commercial footprint. In 2009, he joined Beam Global Spirits & Wine as Chief Executive Officer, entering a business defined by heritage, brand strength, and ambition. Today, Matthew is Chairman & CEO of Beam Suntory Inc. (since 2009), continuing a career built around operating discipline, regional command, and board-level judgment.
The Work Today
Since 2019, he has also been Lead Independent Director at The Clorox Company. Across these posts, the through-line is leadership at scale: operational management, regional oversight, and governance. The career reads as accumulation rather than reset, with each role adding another layer of responsibility across different sectors.
