Accounting gives resort development a hard base: cost, risk, yield, debt, payroll, maintenance and the operating consequences that begin after opening day. Sol Kerzner trained at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, before entering hospitality, carrying that financial discipline into projects where beaches, ballrooms, casinos and guest rooms still had to answer to the numbers. Hotel-company building in South Africa moved through family enterprise, group formation and resort expansion. Kerzner worked as head at family company, then as founder at Southern Sun Hotel Group in South Africa, and founder at Sun International in South Africa. Those roles placed him inside a market where the modern hotel was becoming both an operating asset and a public stage. The later title of founder, chairman and CEO at Kerzner International gathered that pattern into a wider platform. Coastal hotel development depends on more than frontage; it has to convert setting into repeatable service. Kerzner was builder/developer at Beverly Hills Hotel in Umhlanga, South Africa (from 1964), a project tied to coastal luxury in his early reputation. He was also builder/developer at Elangeni Hotel in Durban, South Africa, and founder at Southern Sun Hotels in South Africa (from 1969), extending his place in the country’s hotel trade during a formative period. Resort expansion beyond a home market tests whether a hospitality model can travel without losing its sense of place. Kerzner became developer/operator at Le Saint Géran in Mauritius (from 1975), taking resort operations into the Indian Ocean, where atmosphere and infrastructure had to work together. He was developer at Sun City resort in South Africa (from 1979), one of the properties most closely linked to his scale of thinking. In 1994, he was organizer of vip function at Nelson Mandela's inauguration at Nelson Mandela presidential inauguration in South Africa (1994), a role connected to a major public moment in the country. Integrated resort development uses narrative, water, lodging, gaming, leisure and circulation as parts of one commercial proposition. In the same year, Kerzner was developer at Atlantis Resort / Paradise Island Resort in The Bahamas (from 1994).

Signature

Sol's signature properties include Sun City, Atlantis Paradise Island, The Beverly Hills Hotel, Le Saint Geran, and Atlantis The Palm. In resort development, a signature is not necessarily a façade or a single service ritual. In Kerzner’s case, Sun City stands for the large resort proposition associated with his South African work. Atlantis Paradise Island and Atlantis The Palm point to destination-making built around water, scale and escape. The Beverly Hills Hotel and Le Saint Geran sit in another register: resort hotels shaped by setting, climate and the formal habits of leisure service. Across those addresses, the consistent mark was occasion. The properties were made to be entered, navigated and operated, with hospitality treated as both a business system and a staged guest experience.

Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership Hall of Honor. Sol's honors include Honoured among 100 remarkable Jewish South Africans who have contributed to South Africa (2024), Lifetime Achievement Award (2019), and Honorary Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George. Recognition sits across civic contribution, lifetime achievement and formal distinction. It also marks the industry footprint of a developer whose name became attached to destination hospitality at full scale: not hotels as lodging alone, but resorts as coordinated environments for travel, leisure and entertainment.
