The Making
Luxury hospitality, in Adrian Zecha’s case, was built from publishing, travel intelligence, and site judgment before it became a resort language. The education listed for Zecha — Phillips Academy, Oxford University, Dickinson College, and Johns Hopkins University — gives the background to a career that moved between culture, geography, and service rather than through a single hotel-school track. Hospitality brands often start with rooms; this one’s precursor was editorial. In 1961, Zecha founded Asia Magazine, which operated until 1998, and in 1970 he established Orientations magazine in Hong Kong. Those publishing ventures trained the same muscles later used in hotels: reading place, audience, cultural context, and the difference between surface decoration and material identity. Luxury hotel-making in the 1970s was being redefined around international standards, service systems, and destination appeal. Regent International Hotels, co-founded by Zecha in 1972, placed him inside that shift until 1986, before the resort work for which he is most closely associated took shape. Resort craft changed again in 1988 with the founding of Aman Resorts. Zecha’s work there made privacy, restraint, setting, and service cadence central to the brand proposition. The later co-founding of GHM Hotels in 1992 extended that approach into another hospitality platform without turning it into a single fixed formula. The later ventures show a continued interest in brand architecture and resort positioning rather than a retirement from the field. Maha Resorts was established in 2000, followed by Azerai Resorts in 2017 and Azumi in 2020, each kept within the same broad discipline: lodging concepts built around location, atmosphere, and measured service.
The Work Today
Contemporary luxury hospitality still carries the marks of the group model associated with Adrian Zecha: refined design, discreet service, and culturally significant locations. The work is less about display than control — of arrival, silence, scale, materials, and staff presence — so that the property reads as a composed environment rather than a conventional hotel product.
