i. Biography
He said he got into wine through food, and that is the cleanest way to read Alan Tardi’s work: kitchen discipline first, then wine education, writing, and consulting. The table was the point of contact. Ingredients, technique, and terroir all sit in the same frame in his practice.
Coming Up
Training at San Francisco Conservatory of Music and University gave Alan Tardi a formal start before he moved into the kitchen, where service set the tempo and precision mattered. As chef at Chantrelle and Lafayette in New York, NY, he worked in the pressure of restaurant cooking and learned how food can hold a room together. Those years were not separate from his later wine work; they were the first part of it. Ownership made that connection even tighter. Alan Tardi was owner and chef at Follonico in New York, NY (1992–2001), a role that put menu, room, and pace under one set of decisions. He is now a freelance writer and restaurant consultant, roles that draw on the same hospitality knowledge and turn it into something useful for others.
Where They Are Now
New York Wine Studio in New York was founded by Alan Tardi, extending a career that moved from the stove toward the glass without breaking the link between them. He also teaches for Wine Scholar Guild and the International Culinary Center in New York City, where food-and-wine experience gives the instruction a practical edge. The work stays close to service, but it also reaches into scholarship. Italian Wine Scholar sits among his credentials, which fits a career built around wine study as much as restaurant work. Alan Tardi came to wine through flavor, then kept building through teaching, writing, and consulting.
In Their Words “The food, wine, French babble, and cozy atmosphere made me feel quite good indeed.” Taken together, those lines point to the way Alan Tardi reads hospitality: atmosphere matters, place matters, and travel can sharpen both palate and judgment. The first line is about the room as a whole; the second is about firsthand exposure to the places that shape taste.
Honors
Alan's honors include James Beard Award and Gourmand Best in the World Award. They mark a career recognized not just for its kitchen origins, but for the way Alan Tardi carried that base into wine education, writing, and consulting.
