Study, fieldwork, and repetition shaped the early formation of Alex Foillard’s approach to wine. Agricultural school in Montpellier and Beaune gave him the technical base; Domaine Prieuré-Roch in Nuits-Saint-Georges put that training into practice through a work-study placement. By 2015, work at the family estate, Domaine Jean Foillard in Villié-Morgon, had added another layer: the demands of harvest, cellar work, and the day-to-day discipline that sit behind the finished bottles. The sequence runs from classroom to cellar to family estate, with each stage building the same craft vocabulary of precision and patience. Independent production entered the picture in 2015 with Domaine Alex Foillard, while the family estate remained part of the working equation. That dual line has defined Alex Foillard’s position ever since: one foot in an estate carrying the family name, the other in a domaine under his own. He has been winemaker at Domaine Alex Foillard in Brouilly since 2016, and in that same year he also worked at the family estate, Domaine Jean Foillard in Villié-Morgon. The result is a career built on continuity, but not on repetition for its own sake.

Where They Are Now

At Domaine Alex Foillard in Brouilly, Alex Foillard works around preservation and structure, keeping the wines intact without flattening their character. The method he describes is plain: “We play with the amount of CO2 gas to help preserve the wines.” That line gets to the point. It is a cellar decision aimed at holding freshness and protection in balance, while leaving room for the wine’s own shape.

Signature

Alex's signature wines include Beaujolais Villages and Brouilly. Together, they point to the heart of his work: wines that speak in an idiom both familiar and precise, shaped by the region and by the care of the cellar.
