Alison Doran has been the winemaker for Hill Family Estate in Yountville, United States, since 2001. The Climb
Training at University of California, Davis set the technical base, but the discipline of the trade came through harvest and cellar work. Alison Doran started as a harvest intern at Simi Winery (from 1973), then moved into cellar work as a cellar rat at Winery in Alsace, France (from 1975), before taking on enologist duties at Start-up winery in Paso Robles. From there, the path continued through the lab and into production: she worked as a lab technician at Firestone Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley (1976–1981), then as winemaker at Firestone Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley (1981–2001), before becoming winemaker at Hill Family Estate (from 2001). Today, Alison is consulting winemaker of Several producers in Napa and Sonoma (since 2000) and winemaker of Belted Vines. That breadth points to a maker working across different sites and clients without losing the core discipline of reading what each vineyard can give.
