The Path
Training at Emory University, the Culinary Institute of America, and a New England prep school set Allegra Angelo up for a career that moved between classroom discipline and restaurant pressure. The first kitchen role at Jean-Georges in New York City, as a pastry cook, placed her in both the dining room and the cellar environment of fine dining, where timing, precision, and back-of-house coordination carry equal weight. From 2006, Michy’s in Miami became the next working ground: first as a front-of-house team member / wine program member, then later as wine director. That progression marks a common but demanding restaurant path, where service work and wine work do not sit apart so much as inform one another. At Michy’s in Miami, Allegra Angelo moved from participating in the program to directing it. In 2014, the wine program lead role at AQ in San Francisco extended that same through-line across another market. The shape of the career is cumulative rather than abrupt: service, cellar, and leadership accumulating across cities, with each step widening the scope of what a sommelier can hold in a room. Since 2022, Vinya has been the current base for that experience, with Allegra Angelo as co-owner and head sommelier. The title reflects a career built by repetition and range: formal study, floor service, wine program work, and the practical authority that comes from doing the job in restaurants over time.
The Work Today
Balance, in Allegra Angelo’s framing, is not separate from the job. The line she offers — “Balance means different things to different people—there’s no universal recipe for work-life balance. For me, balance lives within the work itself.” — reads as a working definition for hospitality, where the rhythm of service, attention, and interpersonal exchange is part of the structure rather than an interruption to it. Her other line makes the same point from the guest side: “For me, it’s a social thing.” For a sommelier, that places wine where it often belongs in practice — in conversation, in the room, and in the exchange between people rather than in isolation.
In Their Words “Balance means different things to different people—there’s no universal recipe for work-life balance. For me, balance lives within the work itself.” “For me, it’s a social thing.”
