The Making
Hospitality development often starts before the first property, in the less visible skills of messaging, finance, and organizational judgment. André Balazs took on the role of Press Secretary at David Garth Associates in 1980, then co-founded Biomatrix in 1988, remaining with the venture until 2000. Hotel ownership became the central trade in 1990, when André Balazs became president and Chief Executive Officer of André Balazs Properties and owner of Chateau Marmont. The portfolio expanded with Sunset Beach Hotel and Restaurant in 1997, then with the founding of The Standard Hotels in 1998, which he led until 2017. As President and Chief Executive Officer, André Balazs owns and operates the group, Sunset Beach Hotel and Restaurant, and the Chiltern Firehouse, working from the stated view that “hotels are like people and personalities.” In trade terms, that means the guest relationship is shaped by the property’s character, not only by service standards or design finish.
