Barry Estabrook

The Climb

In food media, editorial work often means building the frame others read through. Barry Estabrook did that at two of the field’s better-known publications: in Vermont, he was founding editor at EatingWell magazine, part of the early structure of a magazine that would come to be associated with clarity, reporting, and practical food intelligence. He was also a contributing editor at Gourmet magazine until 2009, a role that placed him within one of the genre’s most influential magazines. Since 2009, Estabrook has worked as a freelance writer, a move that gave his reporting and commentary a wider range of subjects and a less fixed rhythm. He also serves on the advisory board of Gastronomica, The Journal of Food and Culture, keeping him tied to a publication that treats food as craft, commerce, culture, history, and idea.

Barry's honors include James Beard Award for best food blog and James Beard Award for magazine feature writing (2010).
