The Path

Working in New Zealand from 2002 gave Belinda Thomson a base in the daily realities of wine and vineyard work. In 2008, she moved into the role of Senior Winemaker and Technical Director at a winery in Rueda, Spain, where she stayed until 2016. The progression is clear enough: each post added another layer of responsibility for site, structure and farming, rather than pulling her away from them. Since 2012, she has been Chief Winemaker and Viticulturist of Crawford River Wines, bringing that international experience back to western Victoria and to a property where continuity matters as much as each new vintage.

The Work Today

“I’d like to think I could leave it in better shape than I received it in.” That line sums up Belinda Thomson’s working method: practical, unsentimental and oriented toward the long view. At Crawford River Wines in South West Victoria, the task is not to chase a finish, but to keep each season in conversation with the last. Her technical background fits that approach, as does the kind of patience required to work with vines over time, where the condition of the land and the character of the wine are bound together.

Signature

Belinda's signature wines include Young Vines Riesling, Beta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Crawford River Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2022, and Crawford River Wines Strata Riesling 2025. Together, they show the range of her work across riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, from a taut, linear expression to something deeper and more structured. Read as a set, the named wines point to a practice built around place, with vineyard decisions finding their way into texture, balance and length.

In Their Words “I’m pretty chuffed that I stuck to my guns and managed to convince the older generation to allow me to move the vineyard in an organic direction, starting slowly in 2008.” The line speaks to how change is often done in vineyards: not in one move, but through steady argument, timing and follow-through. The emphasis on “starting slowly” matters. It shows that conviction and negotiation can be part of the same job. “So far, so good… Carbon neutrality is something on my wish list. And biodynamics has always been an ultimate goal for me. I need some staff first, though!” The humor is plain, but the scope is broad. Thomson is thinking past a single vintage and into systems, sustainability and the practical limits of the workforce behind them. The ambition is there; so is the accounting for what it takes to carry it out.
