The Essentials Blending is often reduced to a simple job title, but Leighton has described it as a more exacting position: one that sits between commercial intent and production reality, with decisions shaped by instinct, experience, and specification in equal measure. As he put it, “In one sense, the role of Blender is the link between Marketing and Production, so it is not a 9 to 5 job.” That movement between teams and priorities is central to the craft as he understands it. The route into whiskey was not the usual one of apprenticeship in a cellar or a direct line through distilling. Leighton came in through finance, and that background brought him into the industry by another path. What began as a practical entry point became a longer commitment to the work. “Finance was the inspiration, as it happened to be my way into the whiskey industry — and the passion soon followed,” he has said. The line marks the shift from numbers to nuance, and from opportunity to a discipline built on attention and control.
