i. Biography
Between 2012 and 2018, distillery communication became the visible part of the work: clear public language around Scotch whisky, issued through digital channels, with Carl Reavey serving as head of digital communications for Bruichladdich.
The Path
Live sound trained the ear before whisky supplied the subject. After Durham University, Carl Reavey joined the original SSE Hire team at SSE Hire (from 1977), a setting where signal, timing, and pressure are not abstractions. By 1979, front-of-house engineering at Glastonbury Festival / Turbosound festival system (1979) put that craft into a festival system; later front-of-house engineer roles with the Yachts and the Undertones kept the work close to performance, audience, and exact delivery. Island hospitality and local publishing gave the later distillery voice its ground. In 1995, Reavey became hotelier / owner at Port Charlotte Hotel in Islay (from 1995), then worked as editor at The Ileach in Islay. The move into Content Creation Manager / head of communications at Bruichladdich Distillery in Islay (until 2018) carried those earlier disciplines into whisky: listening, local context, public address, and control of tone.
The Work Today
Whisky communication is often judged by whether it can say something useful without hiding behind category language. Reavey is best known in whisky for being the main voice and author of the distillery’s social media, web, and PR channels. We genuinely wish to have an authentic connection with the good people who drink our whiskies and support us."
Signature
The public-facing whisky language around Carl's signature spirits includes The Classic Laddie, Port Charlotte Scottish Barley, and The Organic.
In Their Words “Much of the Bruichladdich ethos is about exploration and experimentation, about challenging the conventions that have rather hidebound the Scotch whisky industry.” “We are fascinated by terroir, by the subtle but significant variations that place and aspect and soils and subsoils and climate have on our raw material.”
Acclaim
Transparency in whisky depends on timing as much as principle: the information has to be ready before the argument reaches the market. Reavey linked that move to a wider industry moment: "We were able to move quickly to support Compass Box only because plans for our own “transparency” campaign were already well advanced." Read together, those Bruichladdich projects explain the durable reputation of the work. Distillery communications became faster, more specific, and more firmly placed on Islay, while drinkers were given more direct access to what was in the glass.
