Long-running consulting work at Tournesol in Napa has been one of the clearest markers of Ken Bernards’s practice since 2002. In winemaking, that kind of continuity usually points to a method that can hold under changing vintages: measured, attentive, and built on close reading rather than preset moves. Pinot Noir sits at the center of that method, and Bernards describes the work in terms of active judgment: “I'm not wanting to leave things to default; I actually want to blend the line and think.” That line, in his hands, is not something to coast on. It is something to evaluate, shape, and bring into balance. Before the Napa years, technical training at Oregon State University gave the work its base, and Research Enologist at Domaine Chandon put him inside the disciplined pace of cellar production. That sequence matters. It moves from study to applied analysis to the point where decisions in the cellar become a daily craft rather than an abstraction. In 1998, co-founder & winemaker of Ancien gave Bernards a more explicit stake in the outcome, marking a shift from supporting roles to authorship across a wine program with its own identity. The present-day scope of his work is spread across several labels: Consulting Winemaker of Tournesol, Consulting Winemaker of Yorba Wines, Consulting Winemaker of Porter Family, Consulting Winemaker of Cowhorn, and Consulting Winemaker of Matetic Vineyard. That spread is not about volume for its own sake; it is a record of trust built around consistent decision-making. Across those collaborations, the throughline is the same: work with what the vineyard gives, keep the standard steady, and let the blend settle only after the details have been weighed.

Signature

Ancien Carneros Pinot Noir and Tournesol Proprietor's Blend show the two ends of Bernards’s range. Pinot Noir asks for precision and restraint; a proprietary blend asks for proportion, timing, and an ear for how components sit together. In both cases, the work is in the selection and the adjustment, not the flourish. The bottle is the last step in a chain of decisions that has to stay coherent from vineyard to final blend.
