i. Biography
Head of Winemaking at Sandeman in Vila Nova de Gaia is the post that frames Luis Sottomayor’s work, and it sits squarely in the discipline of Port. The core of that discipline is patience, precision, and a working command of how Douro and Port wines behave over time. In ageing and blending, the question is not simply what the wine is now, but what it will hold, how it will move, and where balance can be found without forcing the material.
The Path
Training at University of Dijon, Charles Sturt University, and School of Biotechnology of Porto gave Luis Sottomayor the technical base for a career built on method rather than display. The value of that background shows in the way the work is described: discipline, judgment, consistency. At Casa Ferreirinha, he joined a winemaking team led by master Fernando Nicolau de Almeida from 1989–2003, a span that required attention to structure, identity, and continuity inside an established house style. Since 2003, the head of the oenology team of Casa Ferreirinha and all Sogrape Port Wine brands has been Luis Sottomayor, a role defined by scale and by responsibility for consistency across multiple expressions. The work spans more than one label, which means each wine has to keep its own shape while remaining legible as part of the same standard. That kind of oversight depends on memory, judgment, and repeated contact with wines as they age.
The Work Today
At Sandeman in Vila Nova de Gaia, the daily work remains rooted in Douro and Port wines, with the ageing and blending of Port wines at the center. The craft here is operational: casks, decisions, time, and the slow adjustment of material as it matures. The task is to preserve character while drawing a coherent final wine from it, using restraint where needed and blending where support is required. Sandeman LBV 2019 and Cask 33 make that approach visible. Sandeman LBV 2019 sits within the Late Bottled Vintage category, where selection and timing carry the weight of the final style. Cask 33, created in 2015, was a single-barrel 50-year-old Tawny Port selected from a lot of 40 casks, a choice that shows how specific the work can be when one cask has to speak for itself. That same logic runs through the rest of the portfolio: the craft is not only about making wine, but about managing age, blending decisions, and the character of Douro fruit over time. In that sense, the career is less a sequence of titles than a long practice of proportion.
Signature
Luis's signature wines include Barca Velha, Quinta da Leda, Sandeman LBV 2019, and Cask 33. Taken together, they reflect a career that moves between stature and specificity, between wines that have long carried weight in the cellar and those that reveal the elegance of highly particular decisions.
Acclaim
Luis's honors include Fortified Winemaker of the Year (2022), Winemaker of the Year (2012), and Winemaker of the Year, Fortified Wines category (2010). The sequence underlines what his work has long suggested: that excellence in this field is measured not only in accolades, but in sustained command of a demanding craft over time.
