Max Schubert

Max Schubert AM (1915–1994) was Penfolds’ first Chief Winemaker, serving from 1948 to 1975, and is best known as the creator of Grange, first developed in 1951 using shiraz fruit from Magill Estate and Morphett Vale. He started at Penfolds as a messenger and junior laboratory assistant in 1931, later worked at Magill, and by 1938 was appointed assistant winemaker before rising to production manager/chief winemaker. Schubert’s work at the Magill underground cellars produced the secret “hidden” Grange vintages of 1957, 1958, and 1959 after the board initially rejected the wine.
