Coming Up

Training at Roseworthy College, South Australia gave Pete Bissell the ground level of the trade before he moved into winemaking at Wynns Coonawarra Estate (from 1989). He then worked in the flying winemaker model, first with Penfolds in Russia (1993) and then with Penfolds in South of France (1994). After those brief, mobile assignments, the work settled in Coonawarra when he joined Balnaves as label winemaker at Balnaves in Coonawarra (1995–2020) and also served as senior winemaker at Balnaves of Coonawarra (1995–2020). The thread running through that span is place: a long engagement with terra rossa country and the discipline of making wines that hold their line.

Where They Are Now

“Coonawarra terra rossa soil is a limited resource. Regardless of what we are offered in compensation, the land is irreplaceable. There isn't anywhere else in Australia that can produce wines like Coonawarra can.” That view sits at the center of Bissell’s approach: the raw material is limited, the site is singular, and the vineyard carries the weight long before the cellar does. In that frame, Coonawarra is not just where the work happened; it is the basis of the work itself.

Signature

Pete's signature wines include Balnaves 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon, The Tally Cabernet Sauvignon, William Wilson Cabernet Shiraz, and 1999 Jimmy Watson Award winning wine. Those wines point to the practical range of Bissell’s cellar work: Cabernet Sauvignon in its direct form, Cabernet Shiraz as a blended expression, and the 1999 Jimmy Watson Award winning wine as the one tied to formal recognition. Read together, they show a maker working with structure, proportion, and Coonawarra fruit as the constant.

Honors

Pete's honors include Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology Winemaker of the Year Award, James Halliday’s Winery of the Year, Jeremy Oliver Wine of the Year, Qantas/Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year, and Jimmy Watson Trophy (1999). Taken together, those honors place Bissell among the names repeatedly recognized for work in Australian wine, with Coonawarra still at the center of it.
