i. Biography
"It's a great honor to participate in forming the new Spain," Peter Sisseck says. The useful point for the trade is the position behind the sentence: Ribera del Duero could be worked with respect for older vineyard material while adopting a more technical cellar culture. The craft question is not old versus new, but how inherited viticulture and modern practice are made to carry the same fruit.
The Route
Bordeaux provided the first working frame: vineyard discipline, cellar order, and the habits of a region built on repetition. Peter Sisseck worked in various Bordeaux vineyards, including Château Rahoul and Château Landiras, before the Spanish chapter took shape. From 1993, a project to modernize winemaking practices placed that training into a different context, where method had to answer local conditions rather than copy an outside model. The later role of technical director at Hacienda Monasterio extended that work in Ribera del Duero, and the founding of Dominio de Pingus in 1995 fixed it to a single estate.
The Work Today
Viticulture at Dominio de Pingus, founded by Peter Sisseck in 1995 in Quintanilla de Onésimo, Valladolid, is described through canopy and vineyard condition rather than cellar theatre. The emphasis on maintaining lush vineyards that provide natural sun protection is practical field work, even when it draws local curiosity. Sisseck’s phrase, wines “made with a lot of love,” sits inside that practice: early experiments became estate habits, and those habits now define the working language of Dominio de Pingus.
Signature
Signature bottlings include Pingus and Flor de Pingus.
The Record
Recognition for the work at Dominio de Pingus has attached to both the wines and the broader Ribera del Duero context in which Peter Sisseck works. The important trade marker is influence through practice: quality standards, modernized winemaking methods, and a visible estate model in the region. That standing has placed Sisseck among leading figures in winemaking while keeping the evidence in the bottle and in the vineyards that supply it.
