The vineyard and cellar held together

The fruit brief begins in the vineyard. Silvio Alberto, Chief Winemaker and viticulturist at Bodegas Bianchi in San Rafael, keeps plant health and cellar decisions in the same hand. He has held that combined post since 2017, after a Mendoza career that already joined vineyards, oenology, and company direction at Achával Ferrer. At Bianchi, the title matters because the work does not divide the growing season from the making season. The same eye follows the vine, the pick, the fermenting wine, and the blend.

The house around him is older than his tenure. Valentín Bianchi founded the winery in 1928, and the family has carried it through four generations, with San Rafael still giving the estate its historical center. Alberto’s present work sits inside that continuity rather than beside it. His stated frame is the search for the right terroir for each wine, a practical sentence in a winery that works across San Rafael and the Uco Valley. Two elevations, one cellar language

Bianchi’s method begins with the distance between sites. San Rafael stands at 800 meters, or 2,630 feet; Valle de Uco is given at 1,200 meters, or 3,940 feet, with Los Chacayes also described across 2,700–3,900 feet. Those numbers do not sit in the margin. They shape the house’s reading of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, especially when altitude, Andean air, and rocky mineral soils are asked to carry freshness as well as structure.

The portfolio is broad, but the serious line of intent is easy to follow: Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and red blends, with white, rosé, and sparkling wines also in the cellar’s range. IV Generación, Enzo, María Carmen, Particular, Gran Famiglia, Famiglia, Bianchi Organic, Oasis Sur, Jóvenes, Elsa Bianchi, Finca Los Primos, Don Valentín Lacrado, and New Age show a house built for several registers rather than one narrow release. The winery also speaks in the language of sustainability, with energy-efficient practices and water management attached to Alberto’s current leadership. In Mendoza, water is not an abstract virtue. It is part of the craft.

San Rafael in the room

The cellar in San Rafael carries the patience of a family house without turning the place into a museum. The room is conversational, shaped by guided tastings, estate flights, premium tastings, and cellar tastings, but the center of gravity remains the wine in glass and the work that put it there. Heritage is present through the name Valentín Bianchi and the long family line; contemporaneity arrives through Los Chacayes, organic bottlings, and the premium Uco Valley focus.

The texture is not small-production silence. Bianchi is a large, historic family-owned winery producing around 11.5 million liters annually across San Rafael and Uco Valley vineyards, and the scale gives the craft a different discipline.
