An 84 hectare estate on gravel and stones

The vineyard covers 84 hectares in Sauternes AOC, planted to Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The estate works from an elevated gravel mound, a piece of ground known for semi-precious stones as well as drainage, and the site gives the wines their line as much as their breadth. This is dessert wine country, but the best work here resists weight for its own sake. Rayne-Vigneau’s register is fresh Sauternes: concentration held by lift, sweetness carried with enough tension to keep the finish moving. In the cellar, the craft is a sequence of refusals as much as actions. Do not pick too early. Do not wait past the point of clarity. Do not let the category’s reputation for grandeur cover the vintage’s own voice. Labergere’s role across direction and winemaking makes that sequence one continuous decision, from the vineyard pass to the cellar tasting.

The château above the tasting room

The house itself is a 17th-century château set above the surrounding vineyards, and the work has the quiet of a place used to long horizons. The tasting room and barrel room sit within that older frame; the atmosphere is formal without needing performance. Outside, the slope gives Bommes the kind of distance that helps a vineyard read as a whole rather than as scenery. Inside, the cellar language stays close to the material: Sémillon for structure and flesh, Sauvignon Blanc for cut, Muscadelle in its smaller register. Visitors meet the wine where the estate’s patience becomes legible, not as a speech about heritage, but as glass, barrel, stone and the stillness of the room.

A classified name held in the hands

Rayne-Vigneau has long been spoken of in the same breath as the highest addresses of Sauternes, historically placed just behind Château d’Yquem in local standing. Labergere’s task is not to repeat that sentence; it is to make wine from the estate in front of him. The next vintage will again be decided by weather, noble rot, selection and nerve, with Vincent Labergere at the cellar and Château Rayne-Vigneau’s gravel mound under the vines.
