Site expression comes before intervention for Matt Stafford, winemaker at Craggy Range in Tuki Tuki, Hastings, where the work begins with soils, fruit, and restraint. Stafford first worked close to this landscape as associate winemaker from 2006-2010, a station that sat near the vineyard rather than apart from it. That early time at the bench still reads in the way his own words frame the craft: “Have the courage to do nothing. By taking a step back we get to really see what unique characters our vineyard sites allow, so we can then learn to showcase this sense of somewhere within our wines.”

The place asks for that kind of patience. Craggy Range sits beneath Te Mata Peak in Hawke's Bay, with vines around the house and a cellar door built for looking outward as much as inward. Stafford's role is not described through theatre. It is a winemaker's discipline: hold the line between the vineyard and the glass, let the site speak before the hand speaks over it, and keep the cellar in service of that decision.

The program works across still red and still white wines, with Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling in the frame. Stafford's named signatures include Te Muna Road Vineyard Pinot Noir, Le Sol, Kidnappers Vineyard Chardonnay, Te Kahu, and Sophia, a set that gives the cellar its range without turning the range into noise. The house works as a premium estate winery with a sustainable production philosophy, and that matters here because the language of the place is site, not ornament.

Craggy Range does not publish the full technical architecture of the cellar in the material available to guests, so the useful facts are the ones the house places in front of the drinker: Hawke's Bay, named vineyards and cuvées, still wines, and the winemaker's own insistence on the natural landscape, specifically soils. Stafford has called it a love of soils and the chance to share that “inner soil geekiness” in a glass or bottle. It is a plain sentence, and a working one.

Beneath Te Mata Peak

The cellar door is quiet by design, set at the foot of Te Mata Peak with the vineyard and mountain held in the same view. The architecture gives the place polish, but the room does not need to raise its voice. Seated tastings and cellar tastings keep the pace measured; the underground cellar brings the work below ground without making a spectacle of it. The hospitality is warm, the atmosphere composed, and the sightline back to the peak keeps returning the glass to its source.
