From the lab bench to the cellar

From lab bench to cellar pass, Renée Ary has kept her work inside one house. She is winemaker at Duckhorn Vineyards in Napa, working from the St. Helena Estate House with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon at the center of the frame. Ary came to wine through laboratory work at Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville, after study at Saint Mary's College and UC Davis, then moved into Duckhorn's cellar structure and stayed with the method. From 2003–2014 she worked through the house as lab manager, enologist, assistant winemaker, and associate winemaker. Since 2014, she has held the fourth winemaker and lead winemaker roles at Duckhorn Vineyards, a progression built by time on the tools rather than by moving between estates. Her present title is Senior Vice President of Luxury Winemaking, but the line is still cellar-side: read the vineyard, decide when to touch the wine, and know when to leave it alone. The 2014 Duckhorn Vineyards Three Palms Vineyard Merlot was her debut vintage in the role, and Wine Spectator named it “Wine of the Year.”

Merlot carried at house scale

Duckhorn works at large scale, with production listed at over 900,000 cases annually, yet the house still asks the wine to speak in vineyard names and varietal discipline. The stated program is sustainable, with Napa Valley AVA as the appellation and still red and still white wines as the frame. Merlot remains the signature pressure point, joined by Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Ary's associated wines include Three Palms Vineyard Merlot and 2019 Monitor Ledge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, two names that keep the work in a vineyard-to-bottle register rather than a generalized luxury register. That is a technical lineage, measured in years at the same bench.

Light across the Estate House

The tasting room at Duckhorn is set inside a traditionally designed Estate House near St. Helena, with surrounding windows, garden views, and a wrap-around veranda pulling the vineyard into the room. Service happens seated, at the table, with portfolio tastings and elevated tastings built around the house's range rather than a rushed pass across the counter. The room is quiet. Natural light does useful work here, not theatrical work; it lets the glass, the table, and the garden sit in the same register. Outside, vibrant plantings soften the formality of the house. Inside, the tone stays polished and calm, a setting suited to wines that ask for attention by vineyard, variety, and vintage.

A ranked house with a cellar memory

Duckhorn Vineyards holds rank 44 on the World's 50 Best Vineyards list, with 3 awards recorded across the current and previous award years. Awards can flatten a cellar if they become the story. Here, the stronger thread is the continuity between Ary's first lead vintage, her long internal apprenticeship, and the present luxury winemaking chair. Three Palms Vineyard Merlot remains the house name beside Renée Ary.
