Cabernet as the through line

Cabernet comes first in Ted Edwards's cellar work as Winemaker Emeritus at Freemark Abbey Winery in Rutherford. He describes walking the vineyards, choosing what to pick, and bringing fruit in at the peak of ripeness, a sequence that places the first decision outside the cellar, before the crush pad or the blend. Edwards entered the house in March of 1980 as Assistant Winemaker after studying at University of California, Davis. A period as Associate Winemaker at Rutherford Hill Winery followed until 1985, then he returned to Freemark Abbey as Lead Winemaker. Since 2020, the Emeritus title has marked a different station, but not a severed one. The lineage here is carried less by a named mentor than by continuity: the same Rutherford address, repeated vintages, and a long attention to Cabernet Sauvignon as material, structure, and measure. His own words put the apprenticeship plainly: “It had always been a dream and aspiration of mine to make Cabernet Sauvignon, so I could not have landed in better hands to learn the craft.”

The house is known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, with still red wines anchoring the program in the Rutherford AVA. Edwards's signature labels give the best available map of his hand at this address: Cabernet Bosché, Sycamore Vineyard, Partners Cabernet Sauvignon, The Partners Blend, and Ted’s Blend Red Wine. Those names matter because they keep site, blend, and maker in the foreground rather than folding everything into a single house style. Bosché and Sycamore are the vineyard names most closely attached to the winery's Rutherford Cabernet reputation, and Edwards's practice sits in that register of selection, ripeness, and cellar judgment.

Stone, roses, and a quiet tasting room

The place holds its age in a historic stone winery and its present tense in modern tasting rooms. Inside, the pace is quiet, with seated tastings and comparative tastings setting the room around attention rather than movement. The renovation has not erased the sense of a cellar house; stone still gives the property its weight, while vineyard views pull the eye back toward the fruit that defines the work. Outside, the rose garden softens the approach. The seating is intimate, sometimes almost spare, and that emptiness can serve the wine well. Cabernet does not need a crowded room to make its case.

Edwards's career at Freemark Abbey is unusually legible because the titles sit in order: Assistant Winemaker, Lead Winemaker, Winemaker Emeritus. The current work is not presented as a handoff narrative, and no apprentice is named publicly in connection with it. What remains concrete is the line of bottles attached to his signature.
