Harvest timing comes first for Zeke Neeley, winemaker at Kenwood Vineyards in Kenwood, before any blend takes shape. His route to the cellar began at the University of California, Davis, where he studied biochemistry, then in cancer research in the Bay Area. That early discipline still suits the work here: measure, taste, repeat, then decide without forcing the fruit past what it can give.

Neeley has had a long association with Kenwood Vineyards, serving as winemaker from 2017–2022, moving into a Senior Winemaker role at Kunde Family Winery from 2022–2025, and returning to Kenwood in his current post. The place asks for a winemaker comfortable with scale and history at once. Its roots reach back to a 1906 winery in Sonoma Valley, while its present work sits inside a large production house connected to Pernod Ricard. The bench is not a romantic abstraction here. It is a run of harvest calls, fermentations, blends, and releases that must hold together across Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Six varieties under one cellar rhythm

Kenwood Vineyards works in the Sonoma Valley AVA, with still red and still white wines forming the core of the program. The house is a large producer, with 600,000 cases annually, and that figure changes the nature of craft rather than removing it. A cellar at this scale depends on repeatable decisions, clean lots, and a blending discipline strong enough to keep varietal character legible across the portfolio.

The estate is also tied to a particular piece of Sonoma County history: Kenwood is the exclusive producer of wines from the historic Jack London Ranch vineyards. That connection gives the program a named anchor beyond general valley fruit. Neeley’s published signature work includes Santa Nella Vineyard Pinot Noir and the Six Ridges collection, both aligned with a site-specific way of thinking. At Kenwood, the method has to make room for both ranch identity and range, for library and reserve tastings as well as the everyday cellar work that fills the broader program.

The quiet room above the vines

The cellar and tasting room sit within a historic rustic winery with modern facilities, where the pace reads quieter than the production figure might suggest. Vineyard views do part of the work, but the room does not need to lean on spectacle. It is a Sonoma Valley setting with estate vineyards around it, a place where the visitor meets the wine after the harvest calls, laboratory habits, and blending trials have already done their work.

The atmosphere is relaxed, but not loose. Kenwood’s classic, rustic character suits a house that carries both a 1906 origin point and a current large-scale cellar. In that space, Neeley’s background feels practical rather than decorative: a winemaker trained to read change carefully, then make the next cut. It stays in the glass, especially when the line runs back to Jack London Ranch.
