More than a title at Obernai

Marc d'Alsace Gewurztraminer and Alsatian whisky sit under Yves Lehmann's hand; the winemaker directs Lehmann Distillery in Obernai, France. Yves Lehmann has held the head and director role here since 1982, long enough for the station to read less as appointment than continuity. In a family house, that length of service matters. It keeps the older line visible while allowing the range to widen without losing the names that first gave it shape.

Lehmann speaks of the house through limits, repetition, and the work of keeping a family tradition intact. He names his father's time plainly: a range once limited to traditional eaux-de-vie, including Poire Williams, Alsatian Raspberry, Wild Raspberry, Quetsche, and Mirabelle. Today the house counts more than 120 products. The distance between those two facts carries the work, not as rupture, but as expansion under the same roof.

A range counted by fruit and grain

The production figure attached to Obernai is direct: 200 to 400 tons a year. That number gives the distillery a scale the hands can understand, large enough to sustain breadth, still close enough to be spoken of in the language of a house rather than a plant. The older fruit spirits remain the anchor. Marc d'Alsace Gewurztraminer keeps the distillery tied to Alsace by name and material, while Alsatian and French whiskies mark the broader reach of the current program.

The house does not describe its stills, fermentations, casks, or proofing in public detail. What it does state, carefully and consistently, is the shape of the range and the discipline of continuation. Under Lehmann, the method can be read through the portfolio itself: traditional eaux-de-vie retained, whisky brought into the same family, and more than 120 products held together by Obernai rather than by a single category or a single public technical explanation.

Inside the still house discipline

The still house at Lehmann Distillery is best understood through its restraint. There is no need to overstate a place whose public facts already carry weight: a director in post since 1982, a family range enlarged from a handful of fruit spirits, and a yearly production measured in tons rather than slogans. The work asks for patience because fruit spirit and whisky both punish haste, each in its own register.

Obernai gives the bottles their address, and Alsace gives several of them their grammar. Poire Williams, Quetsche, Mirabelle, raspberry, Gewurztraminer marc, whisky: the list moves from orchard and vineyard toward grain without abandoning the first bench. In 2012, the house received the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, a recognition of living craft rather than nostalgia. The line to hold now is the same one Lehmann names himself: protecting and continuing the family tradition at Lehmann Distillery.
