Since 1979, vineyard first

Since 1979, the decisions have run through vineyard, ferment, and patience. Mike Peterkin keeps that line as winemaker and founder at Pierro in Margaret River, on a steeply sloping site in Wilyabrup. His formation was not one strand. Study at University of Western Australia, University of Adelaide, and Roseworthy gave him the technical frame; work at Cullen, under the influence of Di Cullen, and later at Alkoomi put that knowledge into Western Australian weather, fruit, and vintage pressure.

At Pierro, the lineage settles into a house built by repetition rather than declaration. Peterkin founded the winery in 1979, and the wines still read as the accumulation of choices made close to the vineyard: texture without heaviness, expressive fruit held by drive, richness kept in line so the finish moves. His own pressure on the work is plain: "There is also more than a touch of this character in our winemaking, where we are always striving for elusive perfection." The sentence belongs to a maker who treats a cellar as a place of adjustment, not arrival.

Chardonnay drawn from a steep slope

Pierro is known above all for Chardonnay, made on a small scale from a rocky, scrubby, steeply sloping vineyard beside Willyabrup Brook. The house also works with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, but Chardonnay is the wine most closely attached to its name. Peterkin’s signature also includes the L.T.C blend and the SemSauv white blend, both forms where balance is not ornamental; it is the structure that lets fruit, texture, and acidity sit together.

The method at Pierro draws on scientific training without letting technique become the whole subject. The working philosophy is conventional, but not passive. Peterkin’s account of the house style points to lateral thinking and pragmatic viticulture and winemaking, a way of asking each season what it will allow and what it will resist. In a region where Chardonnay can carry breadth, Pierro’s discipline is in the line: power shaped by nuance, detail held in the middle palate, and energy left for the close.

The cellar door and the valley

The cellar door is warm, rustic, and unassuming, with a fireplace that changes the pace of the room when the weather turns. Outside, the vineyard falls through the Wilyabrup valley toward Willyabrup Brook; scrub and rock keep the place from feeling polished. It is a quiet room, scaled for attention rather than spectacle, the kind of tasting room where the glass has room to do most of the speaking.

That atmosphere suits the work. Pierro does not need a staged sense of grandeur around Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Semillon. The slope is visible, the cellar is close, and Peterkin’s long practice gives the place its centre of gravity. Pierro Chardonnay is the one the house has earned most firmly.
