Pinot Noir returned to malolactic

August Kesseler returned his Pinot Noir to malolactic fermentation early in his work as winemaker at Weingut August Kesseler in Assmannshausen, Rüdesheim (Assmannshausen), Germany. He has described that cellar decision as unusual at the time, a small technical turn that says much about the discipline of the estate: red wine treated with seriousness, not as an aside to the Rheingau’s white-wine reputation. August Kesseler took on the estate after his parents died when he was 19, when another path, in the car industry, had been expected of him. The inheritance became a working station. Today he is Managing Director, founder and vintner of the house that carries his name, with Pinot Noir and Riesling as its stated specialties. The line between those roles matters here. Founder gives the estate its modern authorship; vintner keeps the work close to fruit, cellar, and site; Managing Director holds the commercial frame that began, in his own account, with wines sold in bulk.

Classified sites on steep slate

The estate works from 32.5 hectares of VDP-classified Premier and Grand Cru vineyard sites in the lower Rheingau, among steep slate vineyards around Assmannshausen and Rüdesheim. Its scale is small to medium-sized, and its focus is premium wine from classified sites rather than a broad regional sweep. Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Silvaner form the named varietal ground, with still red, still white, sparkling, and dessert wines in the program. The best-known pull of the cellar remains Assmannshäuser Höllenberg, the vineyard site tied to the estate’s standing as a leading German Pinot Noir producer. The portfolio keeps returning to named places: The Daily August Pinot Noir, Rüdesheim Berg Roseneck GG Riesling, Lorchhäuser Seligmacher, Assmanshäuser Höllenberg GG, and Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg GG. Read as a set, the wines make the method legible. The cellar does not treat place as a label flourish. It asks Pinot Noir for structure and detail, Riesling for line and clarity, then lets vineyard names carry the weight.

The cellar below the lower Rheingau slopes

The atmosphere is quiet, traditional, and trained on terroir rather than performance. A tasting here belongs to the cellar and the vineyard before it belongs to the room: estate tasting, vineyard tour, slate underfoot, classified parcels rising above the lower Rheingau. The setting gives the work its pressure. Steep vineyards are not a decorative backdrop for Pinot Noir and Riesling; they are the physical condition of the wines, the gradient against which the hands and the program have to answer. The house works sustainably, and that word sits best here when kept practical: fruit from named sites, handled at an estate scale, with the cellar decisions close enough to the person responsible for them. Kesseler’s own story does not need embroidery. He inherited young, changed the way he made Pinot Noir, and built a house where Assmanshäuser Höllenberg GG still names the argument.
