Change held in the same hands

Alwin Jurtschitsch keeps succession close to the cellar work as winemaker at Weingut Jurtschitsch in Langenlois, where each decision has to answer to a family estate already carrying its own line. Since 2006, ownership and winemaking have sat with him, and the role is not treated as a clean break from what came before. He has described generational change as one of the most important periods in a family winery, a plain statement that suits the place: renewal here has to be practical, not theatrical.

The estate works from Langenlois in the Kamptal, with organic farming across 62 hectares and a vocabulary built around named ground. Alwin Jurtschitsch has called it “a very old family estate under a pretty young management,” and the phrase gives the house its working tension. The predecessor is not named publicly in the material at hand, and neither is a formal apprenticeship; what is clear is the station he holds now, owner and winemaker, and the discipline of keeping an inherited name legible while allowing the wines to move.

Heiligenstein, Loiserberg, and the cellar map

The program at Weingut Jurtschitsch is arranged through site before spectacle. Heiligenstein Riesling, Rieslings from Loiserberg, Ried Loiserberg Grüner Veltliner Kamptal DAC 1 ÖTW, Ried Heiligenstein Riesling Kamptal DAC 1 ÖTW, and Grüner Veltliner brut nature Große Reserve set out the house’s grammar: vineyard, variety, designation, pressure where it belongs. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling carry much of the signature, while Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, sparkling wine, skin-contact work, still whites, and still reds show the range held inside the estate.

It is the repeated return to single-vineyard identity. A Kamptal wine from Loiserberg does not need to say the same thing as one from Heiligenstein; the cellar’s work is to keep those differences clear without turning them into display. Organic farming gives the method its ground, and the cellar follows with controlled range rather than excess.

A quiet estate above the Kamptal

The setting is a historic estate with a terrace cellar, folded into the diverse vineyards around Langenlois. The room reads as elegant and understated, with the attention trained outward toward cool-climate finesse, minerality, and the distinctions between parcels. In a winery like this, the tasting room is not separate from the vineyard map; it is another place where Heiligenstein, Loiserberg, and Kamptal are put side by side and asked to hold their shape.

The cellar has the quiet of a house that does not need to raise its voice. The work is scenic but not decorative, rustic in the sense of material and ground, classic in the way a family estate can be classic when the hands at the bench keep editing. What carries through is precision: the terrace cellar, the organic rows, the named vineyards, and the cool line that Jurtschitsch continues to draw through Heiligenstein Riesling.
