Cellar decisions and estate direction stay under one set of hands: Rainer Schnaitmann, winemaker at Weingut Rainer Schnaitmann in Fellbach, works as owner and cellarmaster in the place that carries his name. The role keeps him close to the broad frame of the estate and to the cellar detail that gives each vintage its line. He founded the winery under his own label in 1997, after a longer family history on the land. His own account is plain: “My family has been running the winery for at least 15 generations, but I only founded it under my own label in 1997.” That sentence holds the estate’s tension well. There is inheritance, and there is the moment a maker chooses to put his own name to the work. In Fellbach, that choice did not separate him from the family line; it gave the line a new label, a new discipline, and a cellar in which the decisions could be carried vintage by vintage.

Biodynamics on steep keuper ground

The estate works biodynamically across a small scale: 26 ha and 11,000 cases. Its focus runs through Pinot Noir, Lemberger, Riesling, Trollinger, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder, with still red and still white wines carrying the house. The steep Fellbach Lämmler vineyards sit in the Rems Valley, with slopes rising up to 450m and a mix of gypsum keuper and marl soils. Those details matter here because the named wines do not float free of place. Steinwiege Riesling Trocken, Lämmler Spatburgunder Grosses Gewachs and Lämmler Lemberger Grosses Gewachs set out the estate’s working vocabulary through Riesling, Spätburgunder and Lemberger, each one tied to a vineyard name or a regional habit of the cellar. Schnaitmann is also a member of respekt-BIODYN, an affiliation that places his farming inside a shared discipline rather than a private claim. The method is not treated as decoration. It is part of how the estate reads its fruit, its soils and the length of a season.

The cellar below the Rems Valley slopes

The place reads as a family winery before it reads as a stage. The atmosphere is quiet, traditional, and built around respect for nature rather than performance. Outside, the Rems Valley gives the estate its angle: steep vineyard ground, scenic rows, keuper underfoot, the weather moving across Württemberg. Inside, the cellar carries the steadier tempo of a small house, with the owner and cellarmaster responsible for the wines that leave under the Schnaitmann name. The tasting room belongs to that same register. It is not detached from the work of the vineyard; it sits beside it, close enough that the conversation can stay with soil, fruit, vintage and the hand. When Schnaitmann says, “Life is too short not to share experience and participate in experience,” the line feels less like a motto than a cellar habit. Exchange is part of the craft, and the craft returns to Fellbach Lämmler.
