The Climb

Early posts at Château Montus and in Corsica gave Alain Chabanon the kind of repetition that sharpens a cellar hand and a vineyard hand alike: attention to place, precision in timing, and a willingness to let terroir stay legible in the finished wine. Since 1992, he has held the winemaker role at Domaine Alain Chabanon, extending that same discipline across a long line of vintages.

Today

The estate’s range comes from different microclimates and various types of soil, and Alain Chabanon’s work is to keep those differences intact rather than smooth them over. Each parcel is allowed to carry its own texture and tone, so the wines move by contrast as much as by continuity. Two wines show that method clearly. Campredon is a red wine blended from three grape varieties and named after his mother’s maiden name, a direct family marker set into the bottle. Le Petit Merle aux Alouettes is the younger brother of Merle aux Alouettes, made from the same grape variety but from a completely different terroir in the Terrasses du Larzac appellation. The pair shows how one material can be reframed by land.

Signature

Alain's signature wines include Trélans, Campredon, and Les Boissières. Together, they sketch the contours of his style and the breadth of his attention, each one part of a broader conversation between grape, site, and vintage.

Recognition

For Alain Chabanon, the clearest recognition is embedded in the wines themselves: Campredon for its family name and three-variety red blend, and Le Petit Merle aux Alouettes for its relation to Merle aux Alouettes and its separate Terrasses du Larzac terroir. The work is measured in how plainly each bottle carries its origins, with inheritance, observation, and patience all left visible in the glass.
