Sweet-wine work in Austria changed when botrytised fruit was treated as more than residual sugar. In Alois Kracher’s hands, Austrian dessert wines were framed around fruit, finesse, and balance, with separate vinification of individual vineyards used to keep site expression distinct rather than blended away. “I couldn’t bear to give up either style. Zwischen den Seen was the traditional style from here, while Nouvelle Vague encapsulated everything I had learned from Meslier and others.” Alois has said.
The Ascent
Estate winemaking in Illmitz, in the Neusiedlersee region of Burgenland, Austria, gave Alois Kracher a practical base, while his training as a chemist gave him a technical one. From 1981 to 1991, he worked as an assistant winemaker at the family winery, building the cellar discipline behind botrytised sweet wines and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) wines. The winemaker role at Weingut Kracher and Weinlaubenhof Kracher placed that work inside a region suited to noble sweet wine. At Kracher Winery until 2007, Alois Kracher focused on botrytised sweet wines and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) wines, helping define a modern Austrian register for the category without reducing it to sweetness alone.
During His Career After Alois Kracher passed on in 2007, Kracher Winery in Burgenland continued to be associated with the principles and styles he had established. The relevant inheritance was practical: sweet wines built for balance, fruit clarity, and distinct expression rather than weight alone.
