Portrait of Ana Roquero
i. Biography
Born in Bilbao, Spain, in 1963, Ana Roquero works in industrial design with a line of thought grounded in use. The objects read as disciplined rather than decorative: made to be held, handled, and returned to. That emphasis on function does not flatten the work; it gives it structure, and that structure is where the quiet force of the practice sits.
The Path
In the early part of her career, the field was built from entrepreneurial steps as much as studio output, with Ana Roquero moving first as co-founder at Item and later as founder at Linkdesign. Those roles established the operating logic that still runs through the work: precision, curiosity, and a clear refusal to split utility from form. Since 2014, as founder of Cookplay, she has carried that same standard into a new setting, keeping the design language tethered to use.
The Work Today
“Every element has to serve a purpose and have a reason for being.” That principle sits at the center of Ana Roquero’s practice, and Shaman gives it a readable shape. The work reinterprets ancient Japanese pottery through a contemporary industrial-design lens, with a shell-like form that settles naturally in the hand. The result is spare without feeling thin: a piece built from necessary lines and curves, where the object’s character comes from how it is used as much as how it is seen.

In Their Words “I’m an industrial designer who truly believes in industrial design. Every element has to serve a purpose and have a reason for being.” The statement functions as a working brief. In Roquero’s hands, industrial design is not a stylistic label but a method: remove what is unnecessary, keep what earns its place, and let the object carry its own logic. Shaman and Ocean Cook both sit inside that frame, using reduction as a way to sharpen presence rather than erase it.
