i. Biography
His work is narrowly drawn and well defined: a long concentration on Alvarinho at one estate, shaped by patience, exacting methods, and close attention to place.
Coming Up
Training at University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro in 1994 gave António Luís Cerdeira a technical base oriented toward detail, balance, and the reading of terroir in the glass. In the same year, he took on the role of head of the laboratory and Tasting Panel at Vinho Verde Wine Commission (1994–2016), where the work centered on standards, consistency, and regional identity. That combination of lab discipline and tasting judgment is the kind of background that sharpens both analysis and restraint. Since 1994, António has been manager and winemaker at Soalheiro, a position that keeps the daily work tied to the estate’s own definition of style. Over time, his role there has been less about a single signature move than about maintaining continuity across vineyard and winery, and keeping the house language clear.
Where They Are Now
Alvarinho is the grape at the center of António’s work, and his approach to it is built on long repetition rather than display. At Soalheiro, that focus is most visible in Primeiras Vinhas Alvarinho, the estate’s flagship wine made from organic grapes grown in the Primeiras Vinhas vineyard next to the winery. With vineyard and cellar so close, the wine carries the kind of immediacy that comes from working a site without much distance between fruit and final decision. Precision is the point, but not at the expense of texture. António’s wines hold definition while still leaving room for fruit and structure to register clearly, which is why the range reads as a controlled study in how one grape can be handled across different expressions without losing identity.
Signature
António's signature wines include Primeiras Vinhas Alvarinho Classico, and Granit Alvarinho. Together, they map the working range of his style at Soalheiro: clarity first, fidelity to Alvarinho, and enough variation in expression to show how the grape can move across registers without losing its core character.
