i. Biography
At Sorrenberg in Beechworth, the vineyard is worked as a set of conditions rather than a backdrop. Barry Morey puts the home block in those terms: surrounded by forest, taking air drainage from the surrounding hills. The site asks for cool nights, slow ripening and close reading, and the wine is made on that basis.
The Path
Barry Morey is today the owner, winemaker, and vigneron of Sorrenberg. Those titles sit on top of fieldwork as much as cellar work, and on the day-to-day judgement required when season, site and farming all have to line up.
The Work Today
At Sorrenberg, Morey continues as owner and winemaker, and also as vigneron. His specialty is sustainable viticulture and Australian Gamay, with the work shaped by minimal-intervention, biodynamic farming with minimal inputs and very little intervention in winemaking, a craft approach attached to the estate in 2000. The method is plain: keep inputs low, keep the hand light, and let the fruit, soil and site carry the load. The home block remains central to how he describes the wine. It is surrounded by forest; it receives air drainage from the surrounding hills; cooler night air helps ripen the fruit while giving the vine respite. In Morey’s telling, these are working conditions, not scenery: slope, shade, air and temperature are the factors that frame ripeness, balance and vine health. The same close attention extends beneath the vineyard surface. “I am proud of the improvements we have seen in our soils.” For a grower whose titles include both winemaker and vigneron, that places the emphasis where it belongs: in the block, in the ground, and in the long work of farming that happens before a bottle exists.
Signature
Barry's signature wines include Gamay, Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon, and Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc Merlot.
In Their Words “The home block is surrounded by forest and receives all the air drainage from the surrounding hills.” “I am proud of the improvements we have seen in our soils.”
Acclaim
The mark of Morey’s work is consistency between farming and making: sustainable viticulture, Australian Gamay, biodynamic farming, minimal inputs and restrained winemaking at a Beechworth estate. The recognition sits in that alignment, where vineyard practice and cellar practice reinforce each other instead of pulling apart. His own words make the point without ornament. Gamay is described through the block that shapes it; the block is described through forest, hill air and cool nights; soil improvement is treated as something worth naming. The respect around the work starts with those facts and stays with them.
