Benoit Pineau trained at BTS Viticulture Enology, Bordeaux France, Licence Pro Chalon sur Saone France (2005), and DNO Toulouse France (2007), a sequence of studies that gave him both technical discipline and the language of wine from the ground up. From there, he began the long apprenticeship that is so often the making of a serious winemaker: first as Cellar Hand at Chateau Romanin in Saint Remy de Provence, France, then as Cellar Hand at Chateau Lascombes in Margaux, France (from 2002), where the cadence of harvest and élevage would have shaped his sense of precision. The path then stretched farther afield to Cellar Hand at Tatachilla Winery in McLaren Vale, Australia (from 2003), before continuing in California as Cellar Hand at Cain Vineyards in Saint Helena, CA (from 2006). That same year, he also served as Assistant Winemaker at Les Caves de La Tourangelle in Saint Georges sur Cher, France (from 2006), a role that signaled a movement from helper to decision-maker, from following the work to beginning to guide it. His rise continued in the United States, where his résumé began to gather the distinct rhythm of a career built on both vineyard and cellar. He became winemaker at First Colony Winery in Charlottesville, VA (2007–2008), then moved into the vineyard itself as Vineyards Manager at Sweely Estate Vineyards in Madison, VA (2008–2009). The progression suggests a broadening of scope: not simply making wine, but learning to shape the fruit before it ever reached the press. In 2018–2020, Pineau served as winemaker at Stone Tower Winery in Leesburg, VA, adding another chapter to a career that had already crossed regions and decades. Seen together, these positions trace a professional life defined by movement but not drift: each post building on the last, each cellar adding another layer to a winemaking philosophy grounded in Bordeaux varietals and strengthened by international experience.

Where They Are Now

The present work centers on Bordeaux varietals, a fitting focus for a winemaker whose studies ran through Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Toulouse and whose career has repeatedly returned to the structures and possibilities of those grapes. Pineau’s path has given him more than technical fluency; it has given him perspective, the kind that comes from seeing wine not only in the bottle but in the soils, cellars, and climates that shape it. An American winemaker with a French upbringing, he has described his origins with unusual geographic precision: "I was born and raised in the Loire Valley of France in the small wine appellation of Jasnières, which only has 161 acres." The line carries its own quiet elegance, setting a miniature homeland against the breadth of the career that followed.
