Wine production begins with site reading before it becomes cellar work: climate, soil, vine material, harvest decisions, and the discipline of bringing fruit into stable form. Early in his career, Adriano Kaufmann worked as a winemaker, building and operating a winery producing merlot and Sauvignon Blanc at Adriano Kaufmann winery in Beride, Ticino, Switzerland. The work joined production with infrastructure, requiring both the making of wine and the practical organization needed to bring merlot and Sauvignon Blanc into coherent form. A producer’s training carries across sites when the task is feasibility rather than repetition. From 1998, Adriano evaluated a proposed quality-wine production project as winemaker at Project for a Zurich investor in Eritrea. The assignment shifted the frame from an established Swiss setting to a different climate and context, where the work was to assess whether quality-wine production could take root under unfamiliar conditions. Viticulture, in these roles, was treated as assessment as much as craft: land, weather, production limits, timing, and the question of what a site can reasonably yield. In both Adriano Kaufmann winery in Beride, Ticino, Switzerland, and Project for a Zurich investor in Eritrea, Kaufmann’s work stayed close to those variables: what can be grown, what can be made, and what level of quality the conditions might support. Trial cultivation extends the same agricultural logic beyond wine. Today, Adriano is a retiree and initiator of a trial project for growing table grapes of Agricultural research station in Halhal since 2016. The focus has moved to table grapes, but the working questions remain those of vine culture: fruit, climate, suitability, and the practical evidence a trial can produce.

Table-grape work at trial scale depends on observation before conclusion. As retiree and initiator of a trial project for growing table grapes of Agricultural research station in Halhal since 2016, Adriano Kaufmann remains connected to the same field questions that shaped his wine work. The setting has shifted, and the product is no longer wine production, but the method still rests on evaluation, growing conditions, and what a particular place may be capable of yielding.
