i. Biography
Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation, and Whisky Stocks for the Speyside/Islay remit is a role built on control of spirit character before and after distillation. In Bill Lumsden’s case, that control is backed by formal science: a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Glasgow University in 1983, followed by a PhD in Microbial Physiology and Fermentation Science at Heriot-Watt University in 1986. Born in Greenock, a small village west of Glasgow, he brought that laboratory training into malt whisky as working knowledge of fermentation, maturation, cask selection, and stock direction.

Fermentation Science gave the early part of Lumsden’s work an unusually explicit technical base. Glasgow University (1983) and Heriot-Watt University (1986) supplied the biochemistry, Cell Biology, Microbial Physiology, and Fermentation Science; United Distillers (known as Diageo now) (1986–1995) supplied the production context. Across Research Scientist work, distillery and maltings management, and quality assurance, the work covered more than distillation: raw material handling, process control, and the checks that sit around mature spirit quality. Distillery management brought the science into daily production at The Glenmorangie Company, where Lumsden was distillery manager from 1995 to 1998. That role put technical judgement against practical repeatability: making decisions in production, reading stock over time, and holding house character through routine work rather than theory alone. By 1998, he had become head of distilling and whisky development there, a role that joined process control with new release work. The current remit keeps distillation, creation, and stock management connected. Bill is head of distilling and development for the company, as well as director of distilling, creation, and stocks across its Highland and Islay malt houses.
Today
Since 2012, the director responsibilities at the company have included Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation, and Warehouse Operations, and Director of Distilling, creation, and stocks. The current titles extend across both named houses in the same trade frame: make spirit, shape maturation, and decide how stocks are used. Wood management and wood finishing are the stated specialties, and they sit at the practical center of the job. The work is cask-led: choosing, testing, adjusting, and reading the effect of different woods, fills, finishes, and maturations without cutting the whisky away from its house identity. In this register, the warehouse is active production space, not storage alone. The experimental habit is stated plainly by Lumsden: “Basically I have a very low boredom threshold, which makes me want to experiment and try different things. This has been a factor in my development of lots of new whiskies!” That approach is visible in Glenmorangie Signet, created in 2008 and described as the most innovative whisky created in Scotland for many generations; it is also one of his personal favorites. The same body of work includes Allta, A Tale of Cake, inspired by a pineapple upside down cake, the A Tale of... Series, Spios 2018, the ninth annual Private Edition release fully matured in American ex-rye whiskey casks, and Glenmorangie Scotch Dr Bill Lumsden x Azuma Makoto 23 Years Old, a collaboration with Japanese botanical artist Azuma Makoto. At Ardbeg, the line runs through Uigeadail, Corryvreckan, and a wide array of Committee releases. Across those releases, the through-line is controlled variation: using wood, time, texture, and stock selection to widen a malt’s range while keeping the spirit legible as whisky.
