The Climb

Study and cellar work form the base of Bruce Dukes’s career, and the sequence matters. He trained at University of Western Australia and University of California, Davis, then moved into winemaking with the kind of patient accumulation that comes from repeated harvests and close attention to process. The work took him to Napa Valley, where he served as winemaker at Niebaum-Coppola (later Inglenook) in Napa Valley (1993–1998). That experience sits inside a wider pattern: time in different regions, then a return to Margaret River carrying technical discipline, not display. The progression from cellar roles to estate leadership is visible in the posts that followed. Back in Western Australia, he became winemaker at Pierro, then later Chief Winemaker at Knee Deep Wines in Margaret River, refining an approach built on balance, observation, and a practical reading of fruit. Since 2012, that same accumulated training has been concentrated at Domaine Naturaliste, where he has served as owner and Chief Winemaker. The through-line is steady advancement through respected estates into a role shaped by long experience.

Today

Estate winemaking at Domaine Naturaliste in Wilyabrup, Margaret River, Western Australia, is carried as a working practice rather than a statement of intent. Bruce Dukes’s role there is both owner and Chief Winemaker, and the wine named Artus Chardonnay, 2021, fits the register of his cellar: composed, direct, and controlled. His own summary is plain: “To me it’s about making good wine that people will enjoy.”
