The Path

A career in estate management was already underway in 1982, and by 1985 Charles Chevallier was in Fargues at Château Rieussec, where he remained in estate management until 1994. That stretch anchored him in Sweet Sauternes and fixed his name to a specific estate and style of wine. From there, his work stayed inside Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), moving through further responsibilities before Bordeaux and Château Lafite Rothschild. Until 2015, he held the combined post of Technical Director and estate manager there, a role that required both operational control and technical oversight. Since 2016, he has served as senior advisor and brand ambassador of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), extending that institutional memory into a more public-facing function.

The Work Today

Senior advisory and brand representation ask for a different kind of authority than estate management, but they still rest on the same body of knowledge. In Charles Chevallier’s case, the current role at Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) is less about direct supervision and more about carrying forward the estate’s standards, language, and identity. The value in that position comes from long familiarity with the group’s properties and the practical experience of having worked across them. His role now reads as continuity made formal.

In Their Words “I prefer drinkable vintages of Lafite Rothschild that will age. For lunch, I enjoy younger vintages at 10-15 years of age. For dinner, I prefer older wines with more complex aromas and flavors.”

Acclaim

Recognition here is tied less to a single prize than to sustained responsibility across major estates. Charles Chevallier’s 2015 post at Château Lafite Rothschild marked the high point of a path that began in 1982 and includes estate management at Château Rieussec in Fargues from 1985 to 1994. The association with Sweet Sauternes at Rieussec remains part of that record, while the Lafite name defines the larger frame of his work. Across those roles, the coherence lies in duration, technical control, and service to one wine domain.
