Training at the University of Cincinnati laid the groundwork for David Darling’s later practice in collaboration, spatial thinking, and the making of rooms as complete experiences. The early throughline is less about a single object than about design as a discipline of context: how structure is read, how a room is used, and how people move through it. That interest in making things, and in the scale and manipulation of space, still reads clearly in the work that followed.

Where They Are Now

At Aidlin Darling Design in San Francisco, David Darling works as co-founder in a practice that treats hospitality as more than setting. The focus is on how design can hold culture, use, and atmosphere together, with food and art serving as active parts of the room rather than decoration around it. His own framing is direct: “I’ve always felt a fascination with food and art, particularly their intrinsic connection to place and culture.” In 2016, In Situ made that approach legible. The gallery-esque restaurant setting brought spatial scale, display, and dining into the same frame, so the room could carry as much intention as what was served. That kind of work puts the arrangement of things to use: not as backdrop, but as the medium through which ritual, gathering, and place become visible.

Signature

David's signature dishes include In Situ, Wexler’s barbecue restaurant, Bar Bambino, and Scribe Winery. Each name suggests a different register of hospitality, but all sit comfortably within his broader preoccupation with atmosphere, sequence, and the subtle social life of a well-considered space.
