i. Biography
From taking on his father’s estate in Treytorrens to making organic wine in Lavaux from Treytorrens-en-Dézaley, Denis Bovard’s path has led to Domaine Antoine Bovard in Cully, Switzerland, where he is winemaker. The arc is compact and exacting: family land, a demanding appellation, signed cuvées, old vintages, and national recognition for organic Chasselas.
Early Years
The beginning was his father’s estate in Treytorrens, where Bovard became tenant at the domaine that carries Antoine Bovard’s name. That position matters in the most practical sense: it placed him not just near vines, but inside the responsibilities of running an estate, from farming decisions to the direction of the wines. His own account of the turn is direct: "And then one day, I said to myself that I liked wine, that I could manage a whole operation and make it work well from A to Z." The statement gives the career its hinge, moving from affinity for wine into the full weight of operation, management, and production. A second shift followed in the cellar and in the business of the estate. "We began making more of our own wines, selling what we did not need to my uncle." In that sentence sits a practical evolution: more estate-made wine, more control over what carried the family name, and a clearer route toward a domaine identity shaped from within.
Making a Name
The work developed in Lavaux, based in Treytorrens-en-Dézaley, with organic wine as its specialty. In a region where site is central to meaning, the estate’s wines are described as characterful and reflective of the philosophy of their winemakers. One of the clearest signatures is La Luge, a biological Calamin Grand Cru AOC signed by Bovard. It expresses the force of its Lavaux terroir and is described as a broad, generous white wine with precise minerality and elegant exotic notes, a true gastronomic wine. Another part of the estate’s identity is time: it is known for old vintages. That reputation adds a second register to the work, beyond release and immediacy, toward bottles that carry the estate’s history forward. Recognition came with the 2024 Dézaley Grand Cru Chasselas, which won a Gold Medal and first prize as Best Organic Chasselas of Switzerland in 2024. The following year, the BioVino Schweizer Bioweinpreis named the estate best Swiss organic wine in 2025.
The Present
Today, Bovard’s role is winemaker at the estate in Cully, Switzerland. The current work remains tied to organic wine in Lavaux and to the specific base of Treytorrens-en-Dézaley, where the vineyards define both daily labor and stylistic direction. In 2024, Va Giù Begn added another human layer to the range. The tribute cuvée takes its name from patois meaning “it tastes good” and is dedicated to the people who come to work in the vineyards. His own words also point toward a personal recalibration around labor and responsibility: "It no longer necessarily fed me and I no longer had time for my other interests. I began to want to take more care of myself." Another line brings the movement back outside, to the vines and to the body of the work: "I need to get back to outdoor work, to no longer be the boss. I am doing a lot of work on my emotions, so that they become my internal compass again."
