Since 1987, Dirk van der Niepoort has served as winemaker and fifth-generation leader of the family company of Niepoort. The repetition is the point. In a family estate, the work is not reset each year; it is carried forward through the cellar, through the wines, and through the long memory of a place in Vila Nova de Gaia. His return after studying, working in a wine shop, and making wine marks a path shaped by observation as well as inheritance.

Where They Are Now

Today, the work still sits inside those two linked roles: winemaker since 1987, and fifth-generation leader of the company. Dirk van der Niepoort describes his palate plainly: “I like wines with extremes,” he says. The preference is qualified by the standard he applies to it: “As rich and tannic as possible, but they have to have harmony.” That is the operating principle here—force is acceptable, provided the parts still hold together.

Signature

Dirk’s signature wines include Robustus 1990, and Dócil. Read together, they show a maker working across contrast rather than chasing a single house style. The names point to wines meant to register clearly, but not crudely, with structure and restraint kept in the same frame.

Honors

Dirk’s honors include Decanter Hall of Fame. The recognition sits comfortably with a career defined by long service, a clear point of view, and the demands of carrying Niepoort forward from Vila Nova de Gaia without breaking the line.
