The Path

The regional work around Alta Langa took shape through offices that sat at the center of Piemonte’s sparkling-wine conversation. Giulio Bava’s terms as president at Assoenologi Piemonte and Val d'Aosta and as president at Consorzio Alta Langa DOCG in Asti, from 2013–2015, helped define his role in that framework. He is now founder of Consorzio Alta Langa, president of Consorzio Alta Langa DOCG (since 2016), and oenologist and owner with his family of Giulio Cocchi in Asti, where stewardship and continuity remain part of the brief.

The Work Today

At Giulio Cocchi, the house work is rooted in aromatized wines and sparkling wines, with a style described as elegant and authentic. That places the focus on line, balance, and control rather than ornament: a cellar approach that keeps expression contained within a clear house language. The Alta Langa position is framed in practical terms, with sustainability treated as part of the work rather than as a slogan. Giulio Bava describes the appellation in environmental and long-view terms, returning to the conditions that shape what can be done in the region. “For us, Alta Langa is a product that must be very sustainable, like all our wines. Organic farming is the search for the possibility of organic cultivation in Alta Langa, where environmental conditions do not make it possible.” That same logic carries through the way he speaks about the appellation’s direction. The work is not presented as a break with what came before, but as a strengthening of the same line over time. “The philosophy of Alta Langa does not change, but it is strengthened.”

Giulio's signature wines include Americano Bianco, Barolo Chinato, Aperitivo Americano, Alta Langa DOCG Extra Brut Biologico 2019, and Espressione Bianc Alta Langa DOCG 2018. Together, they sketch a portfolio that moves between aperitif tradition, aromatic complexity, and the disciplined sparkle of Alta Langa, each bottle carrying a distinct register while remaining recognizably within the same house voice.
