Training at University of Reading gave Helen Mulholland the technical base, but the work that defined her practice was built at Bushmills Distillery, where a student placement became a route into whisky-making. The early stages ran through lab technician work, then into the more senior discipline of master blender at Bushmills Distillery from 2005. That kind of progression is less about spectacle than repetition: measuring, comparing, tracking change, and learning how spirit develops over time. Industry leadership came alongside the blending seat. From 2022, Helen Mulholland served as vice-chair at Irish Whiskey Association, extending her remit beyond one distillery and into the wider trade. By 2024, that responsibility had widened again, with Helen as master blender of Sazerac Ireland and chair of Irish Whiskey Association. The two roles point to a working life split between liquid and governance, with cask, policy and representation all sitting within the same brief.

Today

At Sazerac Ireland in Rasharkin, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, Helen Mulholland works as master blender while also chairing the Irish Whiskey Association. In her own words, the craft turns on wood: “My expertise is knowing the effect of wood on whiskeys so the selection of appropriate casks for ageing whiskey is a big part of my role.” The line gets to the practical centre of blending — matching spirit to cask and making decisions that shape the final whiskey before it reaches bottle. The trade culture around that work has also been part of her account. “I have always found the industry to be incredibly friendly and welcoming,” she has said.
