Memphis State is where Jeff Ames trained before moving into wine work across the American West. That early path runs through different landscapes and cellars, and the sequence matters: experience came from handling fruit, barrels, and seasonal change in more than one region. In Napa Valley, California, Ames became winemaker at TOR Wines in 2001, a post that placed him in one of the region’s most closely watched pockets of production. He later served as winemaker at Kenward Family Vineyards in Napa Valley, California, while also working as a winery worker at Rex Hill Winery in Willamette Valley, Oregon. The record points to a winemaker built through repetition and range, not a single credential. Rudius is the current expression of that accumulated work, with Jeff Ames as founder and winemaker. The role reflects a long apprenticeship in deciding what to emphasize and what to leave alone, and in letting a wine come into focus without overworking it.

Today

Ames’s standing rests on control, restraint, and a clear preference for site character over mannerism. The wines can carry power or texture, but the aim is still legibility: the material stays visible. That kind of discipline gives the work a recognizable contour without turning it into a formula.

Jeff's signature wines include Black Magic, Pure Magic 2023, Black Magic 2023, Spirit Rock, and Emerald Pool. Taken together, they sit in a range between intensity and precision, with names that are distinct enough to stand apart on a list and in a cellar. The thread running through them is the same one that runs through Ames’s broader work: respect for origin, trust in the material, and no need to cover what the vineyard has already given.
