A Portland native, he had already helped start Ritual Coffee Roasters in the Mission District in 2005; his path began far from coffee, as he recalled: "When I got into coffee, I was trying to get into motorcycle design, but I actually met a Ducati designer on a plane, on the way to New York, when I was 19, and he talked me out of it."
